BYOD, COPE, COSU. It all sounds like a Harry Potter spell, to most people.

But what does BYOD, COPE, COSU mean for your customers?

Quick Explainer

BYOD: Bring Your Own Device

Refers to being allowed to use one’s personally owned device, rather than being required to use an officially provided device.

COPE: Company Owned Personally Enabled

This is where a business provides its employees with a device and allows them to use it as if they were personally-owned.

COSU: Corporate Owned Single-Use

Designed to fulfil a single-use, such as signature capture or inventory management. Allowing admin teams to lock down the usage of a device to a single application or small set of apps, and prevents users from enabling other apps or performing other actions on the device.

And there is also ‘Work Use Only Fully Managed’

This allows admin teams to enforce a wide range of mobile policy controls. This gives the ability to separate work and personal apps, including data.

So how do you determine which one is best for your customers?

The four options cover the spectrum of possibilities for employees regarding smartphone use, and one may fit your customers business better than others.

BYOD – Example

Customer type: Legal/Charity

Vertical: Legal

Number of devices: 11

The requirement: Control and security provided on the personal devices of volunteer solicitors operating within a charity. The need is for the charity related work and personal areas to be separated on those devices used by these solicitors.

Solution used: Samsung KME and Knox Manage.

Deployment set up and how it helped the customer: Samsung Knox was enabled over the air using KME and deployed into Kiosk modes, enabling necessary documentation and apps related to the charity work to be separated from personal. This allows both the control, security and compliance with the work and personal areas separated.

COPE – Example

Customer type: Field Service/Maintenance

Vertical: Field service/maintenance business, but profile specifically for board members

Number of devices: 20 (as part of a deployment of 2,400)

The requirement: To safely manage and control corporate data on phones while providing the flexibility to the board and the owners family on using the device as they wish. A company policy is required for approved application/URL blacklists to restrict gambling apps and websites. A light touch restriction, but general freedom to use their devices with a high level of trust.

Solution used: Samsung KME and Knox Manage.

Deployment set up and how it helped the customer:
Samsung Knox Manage was enabled over the air using KME to deploy and enrol the devices into Manage. By using COPE in Manage, this allows the employees to use their phone for personal use but with the confidence that all business data is protected.

COSU – Example

Customer type: Leisure

Vertical: Entertainment

Number of devices: 466

The requirement: Kiosk mode, restricted usage for Samsung Tab A 10.1 tablets into casino environments. Used by staff in situ to track sign-ups, age verification and for online training purposes. Restriction for approved applications and URL whitelists.

Solution used: Samsung KME and Knox Manage.

Deployment set up and how it helped the customer:
Samsung Knox Manage was enabled over the air using KME to deploy and enrol the devices into Manage. Enrolment involved a branded, locked down screen with restricted usage of various apps, to meet internal and external compliance for regulatory purposes.
